Why can’t I conceive? 5 Homeopathic Solutions To Improve Fertility
When couples start trying for a baby, whether it’s their first child, or they are extending their family, there is an expectation that it should happen in the first few months. We are designed to procreate, so it should be quick and easy – right?
As a homeopath, who works with women struggling with hormonal and fertility issues, I know that this is often not the case. Even a healthy, young couple can take up to two years to conceive.
By the time these couples walk though my doors they can feel crushed. There are huge feelings of disappointment, guilt and even self-blame, “everyone else is falling pregnant, so why can’t I?”
Some women have been trying to get pregnant, unsuccessfully, for years. Others have reluctantly used fertility drugs or fertility treatments such as IVF to help them achieve their dream of having a baby but often at great expense and sadly to no avail.
The good news is, Homeopathy can help women get rid of potential blocks that may be affecting their fertility and help them to conceive.
While there are many reasons for not conceiving, for the purpose of this article, I am going to focus on five areas that are generally not addressed or explored from the whole body perspective by conventional medicine. In homeopathy these five things are considered essential to getting and staying pregnant.
Here are 5 key factors affecting fertility
-
Hormonal Imbalances
Common fertility issues for women include menstrual irregularities, ovulation problems, poor egg quality, PCOS, endometriosis, unexplained infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease. For men, low sperm count and poor motility affect the ability to conceive.
In the conventional treatment of hormonal imbalances, if the problem is lack of a hormone, the solution is generally to prescribe more of the hormone to restore balance. The system is viewed independently of the whole person. But the problem with this approach is the root cause of the imbalance is not addressed.
If one hormone is out of balance, it affects the whole hormonal system. It’s like an orchestra playing in perfect harmony. If one instrument is out of tune, it affects the overall performance. Our hormonal system is a complex, delicate, and intelligent rhythm. And in trying to get to the source of the problem we have to be aware there are many possible reasons for hormonal imbalances – such as medical conditions, nutritional deficiencies, stress, unhealthy lifestyles and toxins.
The Homeopathic Solution
Our bodies function best when our hormones are in balance. In homeopathy we address the person as a whole, not one hormone in isolation. We want to get to the root of the problem and balance the hormones naturally. We focus on ways to strengthen reproductive organs, regulate periods, improve fertile mucus production, enhance ovulation and address any other health issues to increase chances of conception. It can also help increase sperm count and improve sperm motility in men.

The Contraceptive Pill
The pill ‘suppresses’ the body’s hormones to prevent pregnancy. Many women I see in my practice will explain they have never felt right since coming off the contraceptive pill. (Or other contraceptive methods such as the coil implants, patches or injections). The period may never have re-established itself properly, being irregular, late, or just not returning at all.
For others, the period problems or hormone related issues such as acne, headaches, or wild mood swings that the pill was prescribed to ‘fix’, return. These hormonal contraceptives do not address the underlying cause of these symptoms but instead mask the original problem.
The Homeopathic Solution
There are a wide range of homeopathic remedies that can be used to assist the body in detoxing negative effects of the pill or other hormonal contraceptives. Homeopathy also aims to address the root cause of the hormonal imbalance and ‘reboot’ the hormone system to re-establish the natural connection between the hormones and the body’s natural rhythm.
In my practice, I have found that a hormonal balancing detox is extremely beneficial for women’s health, particularly in cases of infertility.

Unresolved Emotions
Unresolved emotions, such as trauma, grief or worry, may subconsciously block the ability to conceive. The mind and body are intrinsically connected and yet the mind’s potential and power is often overlooked when it comes to getting pregnant. In fact, it is one of the biggest issues I see in my practice.
Unresolved emotions can stem from things such as grief after losing a loved one or never being able to come to terms with the devastating loss after enduring a miscarriage or a still birth.
Others can carry guilt, shame or anger over traumatic events such as abuse. Unwanted pregnancies can also carry unresolved emotions.
There’s also the monthly grief and disappointment of yet another period and failed attempt at getting pregnant.
The Homeopathic Solution
Homeopathy is such a powerful tool in helping women heal unresolved emotions or emotional injuries to create the foundations for a successful pregnancy. The consultation provides a safe and gentle space to talk about old hurts and wounds. And as part of this healing process, homeopathic remedies are prescribed to ease and soothe painful suffering and restore balance to the emotions.
For example, during a consultation, a young woman who could not get pregnant disclosed that she had never dealt with the death of her mother whom she was very close to. After prescribing Natrum Muriaticum 10M, she cried for the first time since her mum passed and opened up about how it had greatly affected her. Four months later she conceived and went on to have a healthy baby boy.
4. Excess levels of Stress
Long working hours, demanding roles, a home to manage, and long do to lists, can understandably cause great stress in a woman’s life. In healthy moderation, stress motivates us. But too much stress negatively effects the body. It weakens the immune system, disrupts the hormones and consequentially impacts chances of conceiving.
Trying to get pregnant can also be stressful, especially when couples can’t conceive. Charting, basal temperatures tracking, scans, fertility treatments and watching others become pregnant can all take their toll.
Stress activates the body’s natural flight or fight response to help cope with the perceived threats at hand, and so dealing with danger becomes the body’s number one priority. While in stress mode, the body shuts down functions that are not seen as vital to our survival. Reproduction, digestion and immunity are no longer a priority and go on the ‘backburner’ until your body and mind feel safe again. So as the stress continues so too does the overall disruption to your body.
The Homeopathic Solution
In Homeopathy, emotional and mental health is just as important as physical well-being. The two are intrinsically linked.
Whether stress is related to modern life’s challenges, a hectic lifestyle, or the disappointment of yet another period, homeopathic remedies can bring about an overall experience of calm and ease. This in turn will allow the body to return to its natural state of balance and prioritise reproductive activity as the perceived danger has now passed. By bringing the body to a more receptive place to conceive, the chances of become pregnant increase.

Self-Limiting Beliefs
There is a saying by Naomi Judd “your body hears everything your mind says” and a good reminder of the importance of the mind and body connection yet again.
It is not uncommon during the consultation to hear women say:
-
“I will never get pregnant”.
-
“Most women with unexplained infertility never get to have a baby”.
-
“People with this condition find it really hard to get pregnant. It’s unlikely it will happen for me”.
-
“The doctor says it’s unlikely I will get pregnant”.
-
“My mum had problems conceiving and so will I”.
-
“My life won’t be fulfilled if I don’t have a baby”.
Conversely, thinking ‘positively’, when deep down feelings are being ignored, is not a recipe for success either.
The Homeopathic Solution
In a homeopathy consultation, we often uncover these self-limiting beliefs and a gentle reflection can be hugely beneficial as part of the healing process. Self-awareness is the first step to help bring about change. Homeopathy is not only excellent at helping us recognise this, but it can help us cut through emotional blocks and beliefs at a rapid pace. It also speeds up the path of self-discovery and ultimately helps a person heal and let go of emotions that no longer serve them in helping them achieve their desire to have a baby.
A few final thoughts
I’ve mainly dealt with women and infertility in this article. Of course there is another half of this story – male infertility. That’s an article for another day. But suffice to say that Homeopathy offers successful treatment options in this area too.
Conclusion
There are many aspects involved in getting pregnant and it is a combination of small improvements that will make a significant difference in helping couples conceive. In Homeopathy, treatment plans are all individualised recognising that every person is unique and their needs differ. As a holistic approach to health, homeopathy has a wealth of support to help reduce potential blocks that may be affecting fertility, boost chances of getting pregnant and in due time, welcome the arrival of a healthy baby.
