Candida – A Common Hidden Cause of Eczema

Candida is a genus of yeasts and is the most common cause of fungal infections worldwide. [1] On large scale these organ-isms coexist with other beneficial bacteria in our digestive system and other mucus membranes. When our mucosal barriers are dis-rupted or the immune system is compromised, it can proliferate the growth of Candida, manifesting Eczema.
Eczema is often associated with the overgrowth of Candida albicans [2], an unfriendly yeast in the digestive system. The consequences of a Candida overgrowth include the development of food sensitivities that might trigger a bout of eczema. Some of the causes of Candida overgrowth include diets high in processed and refined diets (white sugar, white rice, white flour) along with frequent use of antibiotics. These issues create a perfect environment for Candida to flourish within our bodies. This can develop into Dysbiosis [3] and leaky gut syndrome, explaining the overachieving immune responses resulting in skin inflammation, allergies and asthma.

In most cases, a healthy immune system can keep the balance be-tween good bacteria and fungus such as Candida in check. Candida can occur anywhere in the body, but it is most commonly found in areas where there are mucous membranes such as the vaginal tract, rectum and throat. Some causes of overgrowth of Candida can include prolonged use of antibiotics [4 – common side effects of antibiotics], the Birth Control Pill (BCP), eating refined sugar and processed foods, as well as immune suppression.
The Candida connection with allergies, asthma, and dermatitis has long been accepted. Current research suggests Candida antigens may trigger celiac and Crohn’s disease.
Even though these links of Candida to disease are acknowledged, the conventional medical community is hesitant to understand and accept the role of Candida in patients with multiple complaints often labeled as either non-specific autoimmune disease or more often as psychosomatic illness. Getting a Candida diagnosis is the first step to resolving chronic issues.
The standard allopathic treatment for candida is to use polyene antifungal medication [5], a mold which inhibits the growth of other molds like Candida. In September 2010 I got severe Neurodermatitis that started on my legs and then started on my hands. I was prescribed for 40mg a day steroids and 6 tubes of Cortizon ointments for a period of 9 months. Instead of using the steroides I went through Personal Homeopathic Remedy treatment for Eczema.
