Can Homeopathy address congenital Abnormality? Part 1

Can Homeopathy address congenital Abnormality? Part 1

A 17 years girl visited me with her mother at 13th April 2019 with the complaint of delayed, scanty and painful menses. Her mother said- She is calm and lazy. Previously she was better in studies but for two years, she avoids study. She just lie down and watches mobile, even not going out with her close friends. Talks during sleep.

The girl angrily said, I feel drain out. Do not get the instinct from inside to go or even talk with my close friend. I like to rest always. My brain is so tired. I feel exhausted if I do any mental work especially studies. When I try to concentrate and study, I constantly feel that I am not able to retain data in brain, after a while I will forget it, then what is the use of studying? Two years back, I suffered from fever. It was not malaria as I did not suffer from rigors but it lasted for 15 days. I was at my Granny’s village. They did not have any laboratory test facility there. However, the local doctor said, it was probably typhoid. When I came back, I observed, my mind is not active as it used to be. I am getting tired easily. Any work, where I need to concentrate mind, its difficult for me. I avoid that.

I inquired about current complaint.

She said, my menses are painful and not regular. Though they appear after many months, still flow in not adequate. I have severe hair fall. Strange to share, my pubic hair are so delicate, when I dry the skin after bath, I see lot of hairs in towel. Is it normal for everyone doctor? My genital region is always wet with sweat even in cold weather making me awkward in public places.

Her mother added that she talks during sleep. It is a casual talk, nothing specific.

She had two old ultrasound reports.

She took the treatment from 2015-2017 for the same. Left the treatment as did not get results. When met me in 2019, she was not on any medication. I suggested an ultrasound. Her mother said, every doctor made us to do lot of tests and could not provide results. We will try homeopathy for 3-4 months as have not experienced it before. If we get some positive changes, then we will do the tests.

(Being Homeopath, we need to understand the pain behind patient’s statement. In such sinareo, I prefer to go with flow.)

Analysis and evaluation- During the interview, I observed that I am talking a girl who has menstrual irregularities, prostration of body and mind, ailments from long fever, hair fall and uterine atrophy.

I first thought of the following rubrics.1

These two rubrics were not matching to her mental picture hence I decided to search the appropriate rubric from the other chapter.

Final considered rubrics were,

MIND – COMPANY – aversion to – friends, of intimate

MIND – ANXIETY – studying, while

MIND – PROSTRATION of mind – fever – after, prolonged

MIND – TALKING – sleep, in

FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – COMPLAINTS of female genitalia

FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – MENSES – scanty

FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – MENSES – painful

FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – MENSES – late, too

FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – PERSPIRATION

FEMALE GENITALIA/SEX – HAIR falling out

GENERALS – ATROPHY – Single parts

Selenium, sepia, Alumina, Thuja, Aurum met, Senecio aureus came up.

I was confused between selenium and Senecio aureus.

Selenium– It has marked action on the genito-urinary organs and is quite a favourite remedy with homoeopaths for the ills and abuses of the sexual system. The most characteristic feature of this remedy is debility.
Patient seems to be in an eternal state of prostration. Tremendous laziness. It is not a case of simple bodily exhaustion but a pronounced instance of mental incapacity.2

Senecio aureus– Its chief action is centered over the urinary and sexual organs, both male and female.
Quite an important sequence is noticed between the non-appearance of menstruation and a host of other ailments.
This seems to be the pivotal point around which everything else in this remedy hangs. As soon as menses appear, everything else seems to clear off. Sore-throat, headache, leucorrhoea, bronchitis, hoarseness, cough, and dyspnoea show decided improvement as soon as menstruation commences. Intense backache accompanies amenorrhoea.2

If we see the rubrics according to sum of symptoms and degree, small rubrics, small remedies and prominence,Selenium came up.1

Prescription-

Selenium 200CH one dose given at 13th April 2019.

Follow up after a month- Menses appeared. Pain tolerable. Quantity same. Sweating and hair fall same. No change in behavior, still lazy. Mental exertion is exhausting. Mother said, no improvement in the talk during sleep.

I was firm about my medicine selection hence thought just to change the potency.

Selenium 1M one dose prescribed in May 2019.

Follow up after two months-

No menses. Sweating same. Sleep improved. Hair fall same especially after hair wash.

Same dose repeated in June 2019.High protein diet suggested.

Follow up after three months-

The girl said, I feel energetic, making out with friends. My menses are good. I require total 9-10 pads.Hair fall is less but I want new hair growth too.

I asked her about hair fall from genital region. She said, I forgot to observe it.

My next question was about study. She said, now I can concentrate but still I feel that I will forget whatever I read.

I clarified, whether she is really not retaining the study or it is just her feeling. She said, I can recollect the answers and write them.

It means, her prostration of mind and anxiety, restlessness, thoughts during study were definitely reduced but not finished.

This time Selenium 1M one aqua dose followed by Selenium 10M one aqua dose after 15 days prescribed in July 2019.

Follow up after five months-

Her mental symptoms settled but the perspiration and hair fall in genital region was almost same.

Menses did not appear.

I felt to go with miasmatic remedy. In the repertory chart, Sulphur stood second according to totality.

Sulphur 200 one dose give as an satellite as well miasmatic intercurrent remedy in September 2019.

Follow up after six months-

Her perspiration reduced. She said, now I don’t feel the constant wetting sensation and can move freely in public area, but hair fall is not showing any significant change. Menses did not appear.

I asked mother about her talk during sleep. She said that her sleep is quite sound and she even helps me in household work. Her exam score is better and now freely mixing up with friends.

I prescribed Selenium 10 M one aqua dose in October 2019 and suggested her an ultrasound as menses was suppressed and she had the last sonography done 2 years back.

This time, they agreed.

The report showed bilateral polycystic ovaries as expected. Uterus size improved.

Later on, we continued the treatment for PCOD.

Here I just want to throw light about hypoplastic uterus which is a congenital issue and usually needs surgical intervention.3

I always considered Selenium as male remedy. In this case, we witnessed the homeopathic contribution in congenital anomaly. Perfect case taking and remedy selection leads us towards success, for that our mind must be unprejudiced!

In next issue,I will share the another case of congenital abnormality (part 2).
